In the country where people eat and breathe Cricket, it’s hard for the real Indian sportsmen to show their talents and compete in many of the world’s sporting events like Olympics, and FIFA World Cup. We must agree the fact that India has no sports culture. We are more into Cricket, Bollywood, and corruption.
Despite 1.2 billion populations, India has only taken like 20 Olympic medals since it first participated in Olympics. India always underperforms at Olympics. The reason behind this is that India’s sports culture is limited to only Cricket and Hockey. And there is so much corruption going on. There is no sponsorship for other sports, and the sports facilities the Government provide are horrible.
If India seriously wants to see good athletes performing in world class level, and to bring up the sports culture the government must focus on northeasten states where there is a big sporting culture. Go to any parts of northeast India you will find many good athletes waiting for opportunities in their life. Sport is a part of their life. Every youth play sports, but could not shine because there are little facilities, and has no opportunities at all.
For now let’s forget about all these non sense and hope for the Indian athletes to take at least one gold medal in the coming London Olympics 2012.
