An Italian job in Bangalore! Gang takes off with entire SBI ATM:In a daring heist, a gang of six unidentified men stole an entire ATM, containing Rs.10-15 lakh, from a branch of the state-owned State Bank of India (SBI) in the city's northeast suburbs early Tuesday, police said. "The incident came to light when our patrolling team detected the ATM missing from the bank outlet during its late night beat and no security guard around," Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) T.R. Suresh said. Police registered a case after the bank branch manager R. Gururaj filed a complaint that its ATM was stolen with an estimated cash of over Rs.10-15 lakh. According to preliminary investigation, the ATM, weighing about 500kg, was not properly fixed to the ground in the outlet and the gang had cut off wires of the closed circuit television camera and its server before decamping from the spot in a vehicle.

On a recent sunny day before the monsoons began, a thin woman settled to the floor in the cool shade of a nondescript apartment building in Dharampura, where a Perna community lives on the outskirts of Delhi. Rani is not normally awake in the afternoon; the Perna practice a form of inter-generational sex work, which is a strangely polite way of saying that women here expect to be prostituted by their husbands. Rani’s daily routine rarely changes: she “goes for prostitution” around 2:00 a.m., taking an auto-rickshaw with other Perna women to public places. “Anywhere that’s crowded is good,” she says. “Bus stations, taxis.” In nearby Delhi, women with the means to do so make their plans for the evening early and don’t leave the house without a male escort after dark. Rani, who goes out every night on her own, says she dreads the moment when the group of women inevitably separates: “You have to do the work alone.” She tries to avoid the police. Rather than providing her protection, they ask for free sex and take her money. On good nights she might service as many as five customers, bad nights are the ones when she can’t find a john.

HSBC and Standard Chartered officers have been caught in a Cobrapost sting operation, offering to launder money. A Cobrapost undercover reporter posing as a politician's aide was offered lockers for black money. They remind us somewhat of the less playful, more functional "anti-rape" lingerie developed recently by three engineering students in India. Last month, a paper published in Nature reported on some water that had been trapped 1.5 miles below the Earth's surface in Canada for a long while. How long? Based on an analysis of the isotopes of natural gases in the water, scientists believe it to be the oldest isolated water ever studied, at least 1 billion years old and maybe as old as 2.64 billion, slightly younger than the rocks that encased it.* For maybe half as long as the Earth's entire existence, this water has been sealed away, unexposed to the atmosphere.

5 Actual Facts About the Science of Dreams

Throughout human history, dreams have been the subject of science and pseudoscience alike. (Last year’s announcement that scientists in Kyoto could partially “read dreams” sounded like BS, but it checks out.) In today’s crazy online world where you can’t always believe your eyes, we hope you’ll sleep better knowing that the following facts are the real deal.

#1.DREAM LOGIC IS NEUROLOGICALLY LOGICAL:Your brain’s activity looks very different when you’re asleep, which sheds some light on the nature of dreams. For starters, your primary visual cortex is out of commission during sleep (because your eyes are closed), but your secondary visual cortex (which normally interprets outside visual stimuli) is still going at it, trying to make sense of the images the rest of your brain is conjuring up.

#2.YOU ALSO DREAM DURING “NON-REM” SLEEP:By now everyone knows that we categorize human sleep in five stages: some deep stages with boring number-names, and REM, famously responsible for dream time. Au contraire! More recent research indicates that dreaming also occurs during non-REM sleep (slyly abbreviated as NREM). REM sleep is the stage closest to waking, though, so you’re more likely to remember REM dreams than those in NREM.

#3. PAIN CAN SHOW UP IN DREAMS
#4. DREAMS HELP YOU LEARN
#5. DREAMS DO AFFECT YOUR MOOD

Sometime after the dna piece, a senior Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official referred to it and asked me, “What have you heard?”

Only now, some 10 months later, the penny dropped: dna being the only paper to carry such a piece, the official was probing whether, or how, I knew of Assange’s request.
The Gut-Wrenching Science Behind the World’s Hottest Peppers:The 17 tribes of Nagaland are united, historically, by an enthusiasm for heads. The Nagas: Hill Peoples of Northeast India—my reading matter on the two-hour drive from Dimapur to Kohima, in the state of Nagaland —contains dozens of references to head-taking but only one mention of the item that has brought me here: the Naga King Chili (a.k.a. Bhut Jolokia), often ranked the world’s hottest. “In the Chang village of Hakchang,” the anthropologist J. H. Hutton is quoted as saying in 1922, “...women whose blood relations on the male side have taken a head may cook the head, with chilies, to get the flesh off.” Hutton’s use of “cook” would seem to be a reference to Chang culinary practice. Only on rereading did I realize the Chang weren’t eating the chilies—or the flesh, for that matter—but using them to clean the skull.

Such is the perplexing contradiction of the genus Capsicum: condiment and industrial solvent, pleasure and pain. I’ve come to Nagaland to confront the conundrum on its home turf at the annual all-tribe get-together, the Hornbill Festival, which includes a Naga King Chili-Eating Competition.

The last known head-taking raid occurred sometime in the last century. (The verb “taking” is preferred over hunting. You do not hunt heads. You hunt people and then take their heads.) Most Nagas are Baptists now. Nonetheless, they appear to have pride in their gruesome heritage. A crossbeam on the front of the Chang exhibit building on the festival grounds is decorated with a row of cephalic bas-reliefs; lest anyone mistake them for family portraiture, the neck stalks drip red.

Not so long ago, India’s state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s telegraph service was at the peak of its popularity. According to the Christian Science Monitor, in the mid-1980s, the company had more than 45,000 offices across the country. But, in the past decade, the BSNL has struggled to compete with mobile technologies. Today it maintains only about 75 telegraph offices. One of which, on July 15th, will transmit India’s last telegram.

Up until recently, the 160-year-old telegraph industry attracted customers looking for a fast and efficient alternative to the postal service. Within the past decade, however, email and text message providers have undercut the BSNL in much the same way.

When Nigella Lawson's husband had his hand around her throat, how come no one stepped in? If ever there were a woman who represented the ideal of homey perfection, it’d be Nigella Lawson. This, after all, is the woman who jokingly titled one of her cookbooks “How to Be a Domestic Goddess,” a woman whose television show “Nigella Bites” frequently ended with her triumphantly feeding an eager crowd (or just her two children). So it came as stunning news Sunday when the Mirror’s People page published a series of photographs showing the British food writer and television personality apparently being choked by her husband, Charles Saatchi, during a recent lunch at Scott’s restaurant in London.

India may be one of the toughest markets in the world for a global company, but this also makes it one of the best incubators for next-generation global leaders. Adversity, after all, breeds leadership. This fact is not lost on major companies like GE and Nestle, which are using the role of India head to groom their rising executives.

Yet many companies, put off by the country’s chaos and adversity, are redirecting their efforts and investments elsewhere. It’s hard to build a global business in India, and much of the success or failure hinges on getting the right leaders in place who can tackle the country’s unique challenges—the first being the structure of the market.

We are reaching a tipping point in biology and medicine. Eventually human tissue will be printed out and installed. Immortality may not be a reality yet, but rapidly evolving technology is making it more realistic, said Ray Kurzweil, the director of engineering at Google, at the Global Future 2045 World Congress hosted at the Alice Tully Hall, in Lincoln Center in Manhattan. "The life expectancy was 20 one thousand years ago...we doubled it in 200 years, this will go into high gear within 10 and 20 years from now, probably less than 15 we will be reaching that tipping point where we add more time than has gone by because of scientific progress," Kurzweil said.
